Visa Pathways for South Africans
South African citizens require a visa for any stay in the UK beyond a short visit. South Africa is a Commonwealth country, which opens one route not available to most other nationalities: the Ancestry Visa [1]. The Youth Mobility Scheme is not available to South African passport holders [2].
Ancestry Visa.
If you have a grandparent born in the UK, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man, you may qualify for a UK Ancestry Visa [1]. This is a five-year visa with full work rights, costs £726 plus the IHS, and does not require employer sponsorship [1]. After five years, you can apply for settlement [1]. Given the UK's historical ties to South Africa, many South Africans have British-born grandparents, making this one of the most accessible routes for this corridor.
Skilled Worker Visa.
Requires a Certificate of Sponsorship from a Home Office-licensed employer. The general salary threshold is £41,700 per year or the going rate for the occupation, whichever is higher [3]. Reduced thresholds of £33,400 apply for new entrants, Immigration Salary List roles, and PhD holders [3]. Application fees are £819 for up to three years or £1,618 for longer, plus the IHS at £1,035 per year [4]. Valid for up to five years, leads to settlement after five continuous years [5].
Health and Care Worker Visa.
For qualified doctors, nurses, and social care professionals. Lower salary thresholds and exemption from the IHS [6]. An important route given the significant number of South African healthcare professionals working in the UK.
Global Talent Visa.
For exceptional talent in science, engineering, digital technology, arts, or humanities. Requires endorsement from a designated body [7]. Leads to ILR in three years for exceptional talent holders [7].
Family Visa.
Sponsoring partner must demonstrate combined income of at least £29,000 per year [8]. Application fee from outside the UK plus IHS [9].
Graduate Visa.
South Africans completing a qualifying UK degree can apply for two years of open work permission (three for PhDs), at £937 [10].
English language requirement.
South Africa is not on the UK's majority English-speaking countries list [11]. Despite English being one of South Africa's official languages and the dominant language of business and education, South African nationals must provide a Secure English Language Test result [11]. This is a persistent frustration for South African applicants.
Tax Obligations
The UK-South Africa Double Taxation Convention entered into force on 17 December 2002, with a protocol amendment entering into force on 13 October 2011 [1]. The treaty prevents double taxation on income and capital gains through credit relief.
UK income tax rates.
The personal allowance is £12,570 [2]. Income above that is taxed at 20% (basic rate, up to £50,270), 40% (higher rate, up to £125,140), and 45% (additional rate, above £125,140) [2]. South Africa uses a progressive rate structure, and the overall tax burden is comparable for most earners.
National Insurance contributions.
Employees pay 8% on earnings between £242 and £967 per week, and 2% above £967 per week [3]. There is no social security agreement between the UK and South Africa, so contributions to the South African social security system cannot be combined with UK National Insurance credits [4].
South African tax exit.
South Africa taxes unrealized gains when you cease to be a South African tax resident. SARS deems you to have disposed of your worldwide assets (excluding South African immovable property and certain other assets) at market value on the date of cessation. Consult a South African tax advisor before formally emigrating.
Non-domiciled status and the FIG regime.
From 6 April 2025, new arrivals who have not been UK tax resident in the previous ten tax years can claim Foreign Income and Gains (FIG) relief for their first four years [5]. This is relevant if you retain South African investments, rental property, or business interests generating income outside the UK.
South African retirement funds.
If you withdraw from a South African retirement fund after emigrating, SARS applies withdrawal tax. The tax treatment depends on whether you have completed the three-year waiting period that applies to retirement fund lump-sum access after ceasing tax residency. Coordinate timing carefully.
Self-Assessment.
Register with HMRC if you have non-UK income. The filing deadline is 31 January following the end of the tax year. South Africa's tax year ends on 28/29 February, creating a mismatch with the UK's 5 April year-end that complicates treaty relief claims.
Council Tax.
A local property-based tax that varies by property band and local authority [6]. Paid by the occupant. No South African equivalent in this form.
Healthcare and the NHS
The NHS provides healthcare free at the point of use. Visa holders access it through the Immigration Health Surcharge (£1,035 per year standard, £776 for students) [1]. Health and Care Worker visa holders are exempt [2].
Registering with a GP.
Register with a local GP surgery soon after arrival. Bring your passport and BRP or visa confirmation. Registration is free and immediate.
Comparison with South African healthcare.
South Africa's two-tier system (public hospitals for the majority, private medical aid for those who can afford it) has no direct UK parallel. The NHS is a single universal system. If you had Discovery Health or similar private medical aid in South Africa, the closest UK equivalent is supplemental private insurance through Bupa, AXA Health, or Vitality (£1,000 to £2,500 per year). But unlike South Africa, the NHS itself is high-quality and free at the point of use, so private insurance is optional rather than practically necessary.
What the NHS covers.
GP consultations, hospital treatment, emergency care, maternity services, mental health services, and prescriptions (£9.90 per item in England, free in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland).
Dental and optical.
NHS dental care is subsidized but hard to access. Finding an NHS dentist accepting new patients can take months. Budget for private dental care. Eye exams are not free for most adults.
Prescriptions.
Some medications available over the counter in South Africa require a UK prescription. Bring documentation listing generic names and dosages. South African brand names differ from UK ones.
Mental health.
NHS talking therapies are available through self-referral. The South African Association in the UK and other diaspora organizations sometimes coordinate mental health support resources.
Banking and Finances
Opening a UK bank account.
HSBC, Barclays, Lloyds, and NatWest accept foreign nationals with valid visas. Digital banks (Monzo, Starling, Revolut) have simpler onboarding. The proof-of-address requirement is the main hurdle; an employer letter, tenancy agreement, or university enrollment letter works.
South African bank accounts.
You can maintain South African bank accounts after moving, though the Reserve Bank's exchange control regulations apply. If you have formally emigrated through the financial emigration process (now replaced by the tax emigration process through SARS), your South African bank account is converted to a non-resident account. Interest earned is taxable in the UK subject to treaty relief.
Foreign exchange.
The ZAR/GBP rate significantly affects transfers. Avoid bank-to-bank transfers, which use unfavorable rates. Wise, OFX, and CurrencyFair offer rates closer to the mid-market. For large transfers (property sale proceeds, retirement fund withdrawals), timing and service choice can save thousands of rands in exchange costs.
Building UK credit.
Your South African credit history does not transfer. Start with a basic credit card, use it for small purchases, and pay in full monthly. Register on the electoral roll if eligible (Commonwealth citizens can register for local elections, which helps credit scores).
UK workplace pensions.
Employers auto-enroll you at a minimum 8% combined contribution (employer at least 3%, employee at least 5%). This is separate from any South African retirement fund entitlements.
South African retirement funds.
You can transfer retirement fund balances to the UK, but the process involves SARS clearance, Reserve Bank approval, and withdrawal tax. The three-year waiting period after tax emigration applies to lump-sum access. Many South Africans leave their retirement funds in South Africa and draw them at retirement age.
ISAs.
Individual Savings Accounts allow up to £20,000 per year in tax-free savings. The closest South African equivalent was the tax-free savings account, but the ISA has a much higher annual limit.
Moving Logistics
Shipping.
Sea freight from Cape Town, Durban, or Johannesburg (via Durban) to a UK port takes approximately 3 to 4 weeks. Full container costs range from the mid-four to mid-five figures, depending on volume and origin port. Shared container (groupage) shipments are cheaper for smaller loads. Companies like Elliott Mobility, UniGroup Relocation, and Crown Relocations have established South Africa-UK routes.
Customs duties.
Personal belongings owned and used for at least six months qualify for duty-free entry under Transfer of Residence relief (ToR1). Apply to HMRC with a detailed inventory. New items attract import duty and 20% VAT.
What to bring.
UK outlets use Type G plugs (three rectangular pins, 230V). South Africa uses Type M (three large round pins, 230V). Voltage is the same, so South African appliances work with plug adaptors. Many South Africans bring braai equipment (Weber-style grills work; open fires may violate local regulations).
Pets.
Dogs and cats need an ISO microchip, a rabies vaccination at least 21 days before travel, and a UK Animal Health Certificate. South Africa is listed as an unlisted country for UK pet import purposes, which means a rabies antibody titration test (blood test) is required at least 30 days after vaccination and at least 3 months before travel. Plan well ahead, as the blood test timeline alone requires starting at least 4 months before your intended travel date. Dogs also need tapeworm treatment 1 to 5 days before arrival.
Driving license.
You can drive on your South African license for 12 months after becoming UK resident. After that, you must pass both the UK theory and practical driving tests. There is no license exchange agreement. South Africa drives on the left, same as the UK, so the road-side adjustment is minimal, which is a significant advantage.
Flights.
Direct flights operate between Johannesburg and London (approximately 11 hours) on British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. Cape Town has direct options on British Airways (roughly 11.5 hours). South African Airways also operates seasonal schedules. Book early for December travel, when demand from South Africans visiting or returning peaks.
Weather.
The UK is cooler and greyer than most of South Africa. London averages 1,480 hours of sunshine per year (Cape Town gets roughly 3,000, Johannesburg roughly 3,100). Winters are cold (2 to 7°C average) with short days. Invest in warm, waterproof clothing before or immediately after arrival.
Cultural Adjustment
The South African community.
The UK has a substantial South African diaspora, particularly in London, the Home Counties, and cities like Manchester, Edinburgh, and Bristol. Nando's is everywhere (yes, it is originally South African). South African shops (specializing in biltong, boerewors, rooibos, Mrs Ball's chutney, and other staples) operate in most major cities and online. Social groups and braai meetups are organized through platforms like SA-Expats and Facebook groups.
Communication style.
British understatement contrasts with South African directness. "That's quite good" in British English means "it's acceptable," not "it's very good." Professional feedback is wrapped in softer language. This adjustment takes time regardless of your English proficiency.
Work culture.
UK annual leave is 28 days including 8 bank holidays (South Africa has 15 days plus 12 public holidays). Notice periods are typically one to three months. The pace is similar to larger South African companies but with more formal processes around things like disciplinary procedures and redundancy.
Safety.
The UK has significantly lower rates of violent crime than South Africa. This affects daily habits: walking after dark, leaving valuables visible, parking without a guard. Many South Africans describe a gradual recalibration of their threat awareness over the first year.
Braai culture.
Braais happen in the UK despite the weather. Gas braais are more practical than wood-fire in most UK gardens (smoke complaints are possible from neighbors). UK supermarkets sell boerewors in areas with South African populations, and specialist suppliers deliver nationwide.
Sport.
Cricket and rugby have strong followings in the UK, making these natural integration points. Finding a local rugby club is easier than in most countries outside the southern hemisphere. The Premier League is obviously a central part of UK sporting culture.
Load-shedding adjustment.
If you are moving from South Africa during a period of regular load-shedding, the reliability of UK electricity supply is a noticeable improvement. The UK grid operates with near-continuous supply.
Children and schools.
State education is free for children aged 5 to 18. The UK curriculum differs from the South African one, and some subjects are sequenced differently. If your children are in high school, check how their South African grades translate. GCSE and A-level structures differ from the South African National Senior Certificate.
