Visa Pathways for Bangladeshi Nationals

Visa rules and requirements change frequently. Verify the current rules with the relevant consulate or government source before relying on this information for an application or move.

Bangladeshi citizens require a visa for all travel to the UK, including short visits. There is no visa-free access or Youth Mobility Scheme for Bangladeshi passport holders [1]. All routes to living and working in the UK require employer sponsorship, family ties, or meeting talent criteria.

Skilled Worker Visa.

The primary employment route. Requires a Certificate of Sponsorship from a Home Office-licensed employer, with a general salary threshold of £41,700 per year or the going rate for the occupation, whichever is higher [2]. Reduced thresholds of £33,400 apply for new entrants, Immigration Salary List roles, and PhD holders [2]. Application fees are £819 for up to three years or £1,618 for longer periods, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge at £1,035 per year [3]. Valid for up to five years, renewable, and leads to settlement after five continuous years [4].

Health and Care Worker Visa.

An important route given the number of Bangladeshi-origin healthcare professionals in the UK. Qualified doctors, nurses, and adult social care professionals working for NHS employers or approved care organizations benefit from lower salary thresholds and exemption from the Immigration Health Surcharge [5].

Student Visa.

Requires a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies from a licensed institution, proof of financial maintenance, and an English language qualification at the required level. The application fee is £558, with a reduced IHS of £776 per year [6]. After completing a qualifying degree, the Graduate Visa allows two years of open work permission (three for PhDs), with an application fee of £937 [7].

Family Visa.

If your spouse or partner is a British citizen or holds settled status, you can apply for a family visa [8]. The sponsoring partner must show a combined income of at least £29,000 per year for new applications since 11 April 2024 [8]. The application fee from outside the UK plus IHS [9]. Family reunification is one of the most heavily used routes in the Bangladesh-UK corridor.

Global Talent Visa.

For individuals with exceptional talent or promise in science, engineering, digital technology, arts, or humanities. Requires endorsement from a designated body [10]. No job offer needed. Leads to ILR in three years for exceptional talent endorsees [10].

English language requirement.

Bangladesh is not on the UK's majority English-speaking countries list [11]. You must provide a Secure English Language Test result [11]. The required level varies by route: B1 for family and settlement, B2 for Skilled Worker, and higher for some professional registrations. Book your test well in advance, as IELTS testing capacity in Dhaka can be limited during peak application seasons.

Tax Obligations

Tax treatment depends on personal circumstances and changes annually. Consult a qualified cross-border tax advisor before making decisions based on this information.

Once you become UK tax resident under the statutory residence test (broadly, spending 183 or more days in the UK in a tax year), HMRC taxes you on your worldwide income. The UK-Bangladesh Double Taxation Agreement, originally signed on 27 February 1961, prevents double taxation by providing relief for taxes paid in the other country [1].

UK income tax rates.

The personal allowance is £12,570 [2]. Income above that is taxed at 20% (basic rate, up to £50,270), 40% (higher rate, up to £125,140), and 45% (additional rate, above £125,140) [2].

National Insurance contributions.

Employees pay 8% on earnings between £242 and £967 per week, and 2% above £967 per week [3]. There is no social security agreement between the UK and Bangladesh, so contributions to the Bangladesh social security system cannot be transferred or combined with UK National Insurance credits [4].

Non-domiciled status and the FIG regime.

If you have not been UK tax resident in the previous ten tax years, you can claim Foreign Income and Gains (FIG) relief [5]. From 6 April 2025, qualifying new arrivals who have not been UK tax resident in the previous ten tax years can claim FIG relief on foreign income and gains for their first four years of UK residence [5]. This is relevant if you retain income-producing assets in Bangladesh (rental property, business interests, investments).

Self-Assessment.

If you have income from Bangladeshi sources, register for Self-Assessment with HMRC [6]. The filing deadline is 31 January following the end of the tax year. Paper returns have an earlier deadline of 31 October. Penalties for late filing apply [6].

Council Tax.

This local property tax funds services like police, fire, waste collection, and social services. The amount varies by property valuation band and local authority area [7]. There is no Bangladeshi equivalent.

VAT.

The UK charges VAT on most goods and services [8]. VAT is included in displayed prices [8].

Healthcare and the NHS

NHS access comes through the Immigration Health Surcharge paid with your visa application, currently £1,035 per year for most categories and £776 for students [1]. Health and Care Worker visa holders are exempt [2].

Registering with a GP.

Your first step after settling into accommodation is registering with a local GP surgery. Bring your passport and BRP (or visa confirmation). Registration is free and gives you access to primary care, referrals, and prescriptions.

What the NHS covers.

GP consultations, hospital treatment, emergency care (A&E), maternity services, mental health care, and prescriptions (£9.90 per item in England, free in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland). Prescription Prepayment Certificates are available for those on regular medications.

Dental and optical.

NHS dental treatment is available but hard to access in many areas. Finding an NHS dentist accepting new patients can take months. NHS dental charges are banded: Band 1 (examination) at £26.80, Band 2 (fillings, extractions) at £73.50, Band 3 (crowns, dentures) at £319.10 in England. Eye exams are not free for most adults. Budget for private dental and optical care.

Medications.

Bring documentation of current prescriptions listing generic names (International Nonproprietary Names) and dosages. Some medications commonly available in Bangladesh may require a UK prescription, and brand names differ. Discuss your medications with your new GP at your first appointment.

Mental health support.

NHS talking therapies are available through self-referral. Community organizations serving Bangladeshi communities in the UK sometimes offer culturally sensitive mental health support.

Maternity care.

NHS maternity care is comprehensive and free. You receive midwife-led care from early pregnancy through postnatal visits. Hospital births are standard, though home births and midwife-led units are options.

Banking and Finances

Opening a UK bank account.

You need proof of identity (passport, BRP) and proof of address (utility bill, council tax letter, tenancy agreement, or employer letter). The address requirement is the main hurdle for new arrivals. Digital banks like Monzo, Starling, and Revolut often have simpler verification and can be opened with a passport and UK phone number.

Traditional banks.

HSBC, Barclays, Lloyds, and NatWest accept visa holders. Some branches have experience with new arrivals and accommodate alternative address evidence. HSBC's international student account and Barclays' international banking service cater to people moving to the UK.

Sending money to Bangladesh.

Traditional bank transfers charge high fees and use unfavorable exchange rates. Services like Wise, Remitly, and platforms that integrate with bKash offer better rates. Compare the total delivered amount in BDT, not the headline fee.

Building UK credit.

Your Bangladeshi credit history does not exist in the UK. Start with a basic credit card for small purchases, paid in full monthly. Register on the electoral roll if eligible (Commonwealth citizens can register for local elections). Mobile phone contracts on monthly plans also help build credit.

Workplace pensions.

UK employers auto-enroll all eligible workers into a pension scheme. The minimum combined contribution is 8% of qualifying earnings (employer at least 3%, employee at least 5%). You can opt out, but you lose the employer contribution.

ISAs and savings.

Individual Savings Accounts allow up to £20,000 per year in tax-free savings. Cash ISAs and Stocks and Shares ISAs are available.

No social security portability.

There is no bilateral agreement between the UK and Bangladesh for transferring social security credits. You need a minimum of 10 qualifying years of UK National Insurance contributions to receive any UK State Pension.

Moving Logistics

Shipping.

Sea freight from Chittagong to a UK port takes approximately 4 to 6 weeks. Shared container shipments are more affordable for smaller loads. Get at least three quotes and confirm whether the price includes UK customs clearance and delivery.

Customs duties.

Personal belongings owned and used for at least six months qualify for duty-free entry under Transfer of Residence relief (ToR1). Apply to HMRC with a detailed inventory in English. Items not qualifying may attract import duty and 20% VAT.

What to bring.

UK electrical outlets use Type G plugs (three rectangular pins, 230V). Most modern electronics handle both voltages with a plug adaptor. Leave behind single-voltage appliances. Winter clothing is essential, as UK temperatures regularly drop below 5°C.

Flights.

Direct flights between Dhaka and London operate on Biman Bangladesh Airlines and British Airways (roughly 11 hours). Connecting flights through the Gulf (Qatar Airways, Emirates, Etihad) are often cheaper. Book early for December and summer travel.

Driving license.

You can drive on your Bangladeshi license for 12 months after becoming UK resident. After that, you must pass both the UK theory and practical driving tests. The UK drives on the left. The practical test has roughly a 50% first-time pass rate.

Weather.

The UK climate is a major adjustment from Bangladesh. Summers average 15 to 25°C. Winters average 2 to 7°C with sunset at 3:45 PM in December. There is no monsoon, but rain is frequent year-round. Invest in waterproof outerwear and layered clothing.

Cultural Adjustment

The Bangladeshi community.

The UK has one of the largest Bangladeshi diaspora populations globally. East London (Tower Hamlets, particularly Brick Lane and Bethnal Green) has been a center of Bangladeshi community life for decades. Birmingham, Luton, Oldham, and other cities also have established communities with mosques, cultural centers, and community organizations.

Food.

Bangladeshi and South Asian groceries are widely available. Specialist shops stock fresh fish, rice varieties, spices, mustard oil, and vegetables common in Bangladeshi cooking. Major supermarkets carry a basic range of South Asian ingredients nationwide.

Communication style.

British understatement and indirectness take adjustment. "I'm not sure that's quite right" may mean "that is wrong." Professional settings value politeness and restraint over directness.

Religion.

The UK has a well-established Muslim community with mosques in every city. Halal food is widely available. Friday prayers and Ramadan are accommodated by most employers. Eid is not a public holiday, but most workplaces are flexible about absence requests.

Children and education.

State education is free for children aged 5 to 18. Primary school runs from age 4/5 to 11, secondary school from 11 to 16 (GCSEs), and sixth form or college from 16 to 18 (A-levels or vocational qualifications). School places are allocated based primarily on proximity. Contact your local council's admissions team as soon as you have a UK address.

Language support.

Free ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes are available through local colleges and community centers. Wait lists can be long in high-demand areas. Strong English proficiency significantly improves employment prospects and access to services.

Weather and wellbeing.

The transition from Bangladesh's tropical climate to UK winters is challenging. Seasonal Affective Disorder is common during the short, dark winter days. Staying active, maintaining social connections, and getting outside during daylight hours help. The NHS provides support through GPs and mental health services.
