What Is a Digital Nomad Visa?
A digital nomad visa is a residence permit that lets you live in a country while working remotely for employers or clients based elsewhere. Unlike tourist visas, these programs are designed for stays of 6 months to several years and typically grant legal tax residency. Most require proof of regular income above a threshold, health insurance, and a clean criminal record.
Which Digital Nomad Visas Lead to Permanent Residency?
Portugal (D8), Spain, Italy, and Mexico offer digital nomad pathways that count toward permanent residency requirements. In Portugal, five years on a D8 visa qualifies you for PR and eventually citizenship. Spain’s digital nomad visa counts toward its five-year residency requirement. Most other programs (Greece, Croatia, Estonia, Costa Rica) do not lead to PR. If long-term settlement is your goal, this distinction matters more than any other factor.
Tax Considerations
Tax treatment varies significantly. Portugal offers NHR (Non-Habitual Resident) status with a flat 20% rate for qualifying income. The UAE and Georgia have no personal income tax. Most European programs make you a tax resident, meaning your worldwide income could be subject to local taxes. Always consult a tax advisor before committing to a program.
