What JLPT level do I need to work in Japan?
There's no legal requirement, but N2 is the practical minimum for office work. N1 is expected for business-level positions. In the HSP points system, N1 = 15 points and N2 = 10 points toward fast-track PR.
Why is the JLPT only offered twice a year?
The JLPT is offered in July and December worldwide. Some overseas locations only offer the December session. The limited schedule means planning ahead is important. Registration typically opens 3–4 months before each test.
Is JLPT the only Japanese test that matters?
For immigration points, yes. The HSP system only awards points for JLPT. For university admission, the EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission) is also important. But JLPT is the most widely recognized certificate.
