Why Take DTZ?
German Settlement Permit
DTZ B1 (both written and oral) satisfies the language requirement for the Niederlassungserlaubnis (settlement permit) after 5 years of residence.
German Citizenship
B1 is required for German naturalization. A DTZ B1 certificate is accepted as proof alongside Goethe B1 or telc B1.
Integration Course Completion
The DTZ is the mandatory final exam of Germany's integration courses (Integrationskurs). Passing at B1 completes the course and qualifies for a 50% fee refund.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I only score A2 on the DTZ?
You receive an A2 certificate but have not met the B1 target. You can repeat 300 hours of the integration course (BAMF-funded) and retake the DTZ. A2 alone is not sufficient for a settlement permit or citizenship.
How is the DTZ different from Goethe B1?
The DTZ is specifically designed for immigrants, with questions about everyday life in Germany (housing, work, health, government offices). Goethe B1 is a general-purpose exam. Both are accepted for settlement permits and citizenship.
Is the first DTZ attempt free?
Yes, for participants in BAMF-funded integration courses. The course fee covers one DTZ attempt. Repeat attempts or external candidates pay approximately EUR 150–175.
