Competitive Master's Programs in Canada + English Level Requirements
I've previously posted about English level requirements for competitive Master's programs in America (NYC), Australia, and the UK. Today, I'm looking at some competitive programs in Canada.
Here’s a breakdown with a focus on TOEFL, IELTS, and Cambridge requirements (for foreign-born applicants).
L = Listening, R = Reading, W = Writing, S = Speaking
Program @ University | IELTS Academic | TOEFL iBT | Cambridge (CAE/CPE) |
---|---|---|---|
MASc in Civil Engineering @ UBC | 7.0 overall (min. 6.5 each section) | 100 overall (L+R ≥22, S ≥21, W ≥25) | Accepted as alternatives |
MMath in Pure Math @ University of Waterloo | 7.0 overall (W+S ≥6.5) | 90 overall (W+S ≥25) | Not listed |
MBA @ Alberta School of Business | 7.0 overall (min. 6.0 each band) | 100 overall | Not listed |
MA in Linguistics @ McGill University | 7.0 overall | 93 overall ( ≥22 in each component) | Not listed |
MSc in Computer Science at University of Toronto | 7.0 overall (min. 6.5 each section) | 93 overall (W+S ≥ 22) | CAE 185 (≥176 in each subtest) |
Things to Note
- Waivers may be available if you completed a prior degree in English (or spent time in degree programs in your home country that were taught in English), but this depends on the program.
- IELTS and TOEFL iBT results expire after 2 years so you need to be careful with your application date v. test validity dates.
