Top 3 Destinations for United States Expats (2023 Data via 2025 OECD Report)
I wrote about 2022's top destinations here, and here's the update for 2023 (from report estimates that 104,000 people left the US on a permanent basis):
| Country of Origin | Destination Country | # of Migrants |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Spain | ~13,520 (13% of overall US outflow) |
| United States | United Kingdom | ~10,400 (10% of overall US outflow) |
| United States | Canada | ~10,400 (10% of overall US outflow) |
The UK cracked the top 3 destinations in 2023, bumping Mexico off the list, while Spain retained its top spot and Canada remained high. So if we're all headed to Spain, the UK, and Canada, where are they going?!
Emigration of Spanish citizens (to OECD countries) was 80,000 in 2023. ~18% went to Germany, 13% to the Netherlands, and 12% to France.
Emigration of UK citizens (to OECD countries) was 85,000 in 2023. ~21% went to Spain, 13% to the US, and 12% to Australia.
Emigration of Canadian citizens (to OECD countries) was 39,000 in 2023. ~48% of this group migrated to the United States, 8% to Mexico and 7% to the United Kingdom.
| Country of Origin | Top Destination Country | # of Migrants |
|---|---|---|
| Spain | Germany | ~14,400 |
| United Kingdom | Spain | ~17,850 |
| Canada | United States | ~18,720 |
