UN World Habitat Day: Urban Crisis Response
The United Nations hosted its annual World Habitat Day yesterday. it lands on the first Monday of October each year. A theme is selected to guide the discussions and policy proposals each year, and this year's was urban crisis response. The opening speeches mentioned that:
- conflict, political instability, and climate emergencies have forced 123MM out of their homes
- 300MM people live with no shelter
- 1 in 8 people on Earth live in informal shelters, with almost 1 in 4 living in "inadequate" housing
Pretty shocking numbers! Immigration will be one of the defining topics of our generation, and I'd put a lot of money on the 123MM growing in the next decade. As Europe and America grow more insular, the burden for re-settlement, integration, and assimilation will fall increasingly on local governments across the Middle East, Africa, and ASEAN.
