Competitive Master's Programs in Australia + English Level Requirements

I've already covered English level requirements for competitive Master's programs in America, specifically NYC, and today I thought I'd take a look at some competitive programs in Australia.

Here’s a breakdown with a focus on TOEFL, IELTS, and Cambridge requirements (for foreign-born applicants).

Program @ University IELTS Academic TOEFL iBT Cambridge (CAE/CPE)
MBA @ Melbourne Business School (University of Melbourne) 7.0 overall (no individual band < 6.5) 102 overall (min. 24 writing, ≥21 others) Not accepted
LL.M. @ Sydney Law School (University of Sydney) 7.0 overall (no individual band < 6.0) 96 overall (min. 19 writing, ≥17 others) Via concordance
Master of Global Health @ UNSW 7.0 overall (no individual band < 6.0) 94 overall (min. 25 writing, ≥23 others) 185 overall (min. 169 in each subtest) for CAE; 185 overall (min. 180 in each subtest) for CPE
Master of International Relations @ ANU 6.5 overall (no individual band < 6.0) 80 overall (reading/writing min. 20, listening/speaking min. 18) 176 overall (min. 169 in each subtest)
Master of Data Science & Innovation @ UTS 6.5 overall (writing ≥6.0) 79 overall (writing ≥21) 176 overall (writing ≥169)

Things to Note

  • Waivers may be available if you completed a prior degree in English (or spent time in degree programs in your home country that were taught in English), but this depends on the program.
  • IELTS and TOEFL iBT results expire after 2 years so you need to be careful with your application date v. test validity dates
